What does University of the Philippines - Visayas stand for?

University of the Philippines Visayas' (UPV) establishment was approved in 1979, during the 114th meeting of the Board of Regents. Former President Ferdinand Marcos issued Executive Order No. 628 on October 30, 1980 which operationalized UPV, with its main campus in Miagao, and with the College of Fisheries as its flagship college.

UPV offers undergraduate programs for arts, sciences, fisheries and ocean services, managament, and technology. Graduate courses for these programs are also offered except for technology. The campus in Tacloban offers masters in management and undergraduate programs in accountancy, biology, computer sicence, management, communication arts, and social sciences.

With the creation of UPV, the regional campuses of UP Cebu College and UP Tacloban College were integrated into the UPV administration in 1986 and were renamed UPV Cebu College and UPV Tacloban College. UPV, located strategically in three campuses in Regions 6 and 8, continues to be at the forefront of higher education, pioneering academic programs relevant to local and national development.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) declared UPV's Bachelor of Science in Fisheries as a Center of Excellence.
