What does Swinburne University of Technology stand for?

Swinburne University of Technology was founded in 1908 and was initially known as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College. It was renamed five years later as the Swinburne Technical College, after its founder, George Swinburne, who wanted to establish a technical college to serve those who do not have access to further education. It gained university status in 1992 to become Swinburne University of Technology. 

Swinburne offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in health, science, engineering, design, business, arts, education, aviation, computer science, and the recently established law school. 

Swinburne has been recognized for its efforts in providing quality education and it shows on various university rankings. In the 2016-2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Swinburne was ranked among the world’s top 400 universities, 61st in the Young University Rankings and 60th in the Asia-Pacific University Rankings. It was also named as one of the world’s top 100 universities for Physics, and one of the world's top 350 universities by the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
