Silliman Hall remains one of the most defining symbols of Silliman University. It was where Silliman's founders, Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard together with his wife Laura Hibbard, first held classes in the early 1900s. From an initial class of 15 boys, Silliman has now grown to more than 10,000 students from around the Philippines and the world.
Silliman is known for its quality Christian education. And this is symbolized by the Silliman Church, a firm reminder of the driving force behind Silliman—Jesus Christ.
SILLIMAN HALL was built in 1909 as an addition to form an "L" with the original building built in 1902, now demolished. Silliman Institute was founded by a Christian Philanthropist, Horace B. Silliman, of Cohoes, New York. This building is considered the oldest wooden structure of Eastern Stick Style of American architecture in the Philippines. The ground floor, popularly known as the Assembly Hall, has cast iron columns and ornate metal pan ceiling salvaged from the debris of a theater in New York. For many years, (before the University Church and Luce Auditorium were built) the social and cultural events of the University including the mid-week Convocation and Sunday Worship Service were held in the Assembly Hall. THE MUSEUM on the second floor was established in 1970 by Dr. Hubert I. Reynolds, an American Presbyterian missionary and former faculty member of the Sociology-Anthropology Department of Silliman University to house the collection of the Cultural Research Center that started in 1964. The exhibits are rare and priceless collections of ethnographic and archaeological artifacts which date back as early as 200 BC. Through the initiative of the Center of Excellence in Coastal Resource Management (COE-CRM) as funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the support of the Silliman University Administration, the restoration of Silliman Hall to its 1909 Eastern Stick Style was completed.
The Robert B. & Metta J. Silliman Library System began its services with only two bookcases and one small room in Silliman Hall. From this humble beginning, the library collection grew steadily. Today, with its present magnificent edifice, some observers have been heard to remark that it could well be among the best in Southeast Asia. The library aims to equip itself with updated materials, facilities, and equipment in support of the University's quest for excellence in all its academic programs. The Library now holds more than 100,000 volumes of books on various subjects. It subscribes to local and foreign serials and maintains special pamphlet collections, namely, Filipiniana, Southeast Asia, and United Nations. It also has a Sillimaniana collection which is housed in an air-conditioned room located at the southern portion of the first floor of the library building. Materials in the collection include the Weekly Sillimanian, Sillimanian Magazine, Portal, Faculty and Staff publications, and others. Various plaques and trophies awarded to the University, as well as, portraits of present and past presidents of Silliman University are also on display. In terms of facilities, the Library provides individual study carrels for its users. In addition, there are also faculty study rooms for the use of faculty/staff members who are undertaking research work for the University, or writing their theses or dissertations. These faculty rooms are available upon application at the University Librarian's Office. For group discussions, there are two discussion rooms available at the second floor of the library building, on a first come, first served basis. For the duplicating needs of the library users, photocopying services are provided. In line with the current awareness program, the Library puts out the Silliman University Library Bulletin (SULB). This publication generally carries bits of information about the library and its operations, and a listing of newly-acquired books and other materials. The staff members, assisted by student assistants, carry out the library's day-to-day functions and operations.
