Silliman University (SU) is a private university founded in 1901 by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions as the all-boys Silliman Institute offering elementary education. The institution was named after the businessman and philanthropist Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman who donated the initial funds to start the school. Silliman received its university status in 1938.
Silliman University is home to over 10,000 local students and over fifty international students. It offers different courses in the fields of agriculture, arts and sciences, business, computer studies, education, engineering, communications, nursing, public affairs, and theology for both undergraduate and graduate programs. It is also engaged in research and development that is focused on the well-being of society and the environment.
The university continues its legacy of providing world-class quality of education for its students. Its programs are awarded by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU) with a Level IV accreditation, giving it autonomy in its programs and operations. Throughout the years, Silliman University has produced notable alumni that contribute to the progress of the Philippines. The most notable SU alumnus is the 8th President of the Philippines and author of the "Filipino First Policy," Carlos P. Garcia.
