University of Iloilo (UI) was founded in 1947 by former Iloilo City mayor Fernando H. Lopez as the Iloilo City Colleges (ICC) aiming to provide educational opportunities to the youths of Iloilo. It envisions itself as a leading educational institution. It strives to provide quality education and train students at affordable fees making it all the more accessible to the masses, fulfilling its mission to make lives better through education.
UI has nine colleges offering degree programs in the following fields of Criminal Justice, Education, Information Technology Education, Engineering, Maritime Education, Law, Allied Health and Sciences, Management and Accountancy, and Arts and Sciences. UI’s Graduate School offers three graduate degrees (Master of Arts in Public Administration, Master of Arts in Education, Master in Business Administration) and one doctorate degree (Doctor of Philosophy, Major in Educational Management). Following the K-12 curriculum, UI also has a Basic Education program or college preparatory unit offering preschool (kindergarten), grade school (grades 1-6), junior high school (grades 7-10), and senior high school (grades 11-12).
UI has been acknowledged as an Excellence School for the College of Criminology since 1991 by the Department of Education (DepEd). In 1993, the Colleges of Law, Arts and Sciences, and Education were granted Level II accreditation status by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU). In 1998, the Graduate School was granted recognition for its Master in Public Administration Program by the Commission for Higher Education (CHED). In 1999, the BS Marine Engineering of the College of Engineering passed the CHED evaluation for Maritime Education program.
